How to Estimate the Price of Lab-Grown Diamonds

Estimating the price of lab-grown diamonds in comparison to natural diamonds is relatively complex. Due to continuous advancements in the production technology of lab-grown diamonds, their quality and prices fluctuate accordingly. However, there are still some basic estimation principles that can be summarized from the current market for your reference. Firstly, the price of lab-grown diamonds is closely related to factors such as their carat weight, clarity, color, and cut. Generally speaking, the larger the carat weight, the higher the clarity, the closer to colorless the diamond, and the more exquisite the cut, the higher the price. Secondly, the price of lab-grown diamonds is also influenced by market supply and demand dynamics. As the annual production of lab-grown diamonds increases steadily, prices will also fluctuate accordingly. Currently, there is a significant price gap between lab-grown and natural diamonds on the market. For diamonds weighing over 1 carat with a certain level of clarity, the price difference between the two is roughly 70% (or a 30% discount for lab-grown diamonds). For instance, a natural diamond priced at 260,000 yuan may have an equivalent lab-grown diamond priced at around 72,000 yuan.

However, “value preservation” is a crucial aspect in the gemstone market. Natural diamonds are recyclable. Consumers can visit pawnshops or jewelry stores to confirm the value of the certificate or diamond, and the recycling price is usually around 30% of the original purchase price (with exceptions for rare or historically valuable pieces). The recycling value of lab-grown diamonds is relatively lower, and there are currently no mature recycling channels in the market. Therefore, if you are considering purchasing lab-grown diamonds, it is advisable to clearly consider your investment objectives. Here are some common investment objectives for lab-grown diamonds:

  1. Memorial Significance: As engagement or wedding rings, they carry special emotional value or are referred to as “life diamonds.”
  2. Value Preservation: As a reward for oneself with the expectation of maintaining or increasing value over time.
  3. Both: Specifically choosing a branded engagement ring and deliberately selecting color, clarity, cut, and carat weight for potential appreciation.

Regardless of which investment objective you choose, it is recommended to conduct thorough market research before purchasing, understand the current market trends for lab-grown diamonds, and select reputable merchants to avoid purchasing diamonds of poor quality or excessive prices.
